How to Improve Typing Speed Without Losing Accuracy

Typing speed improves most reliably when accuracy, rhythm, and difficult key transitions are trained together. Simply forcing the hands to move faster often produces more errors and a lower effective WPM.

Measure a stable starting point

Complete a three- or five-minute test while typing at a comfortable pace. Record effective WPM, accuracy, errors, and consistency. A longer test provides a more realistic baseline than a very short burst.

Find the actual cause of slow typing

Low speed may come from a few weak keys, difficult combinations, looking at the keyboard, inconsistent spacing, or excessive correction. Use the keyboard heatmap and Weak-Key Coach to identify patterns instead of repeating random text.

Use controlled speed increases

  1. Practise slightly below your maximum speed until accuracy is stable.
  2. Increase pace for a short section while keeping the same relaxed movement.
  3. Return to a controlled pace if errors begin to multiply.
  4. Repeat the same difficult combinations before testing again.
Do not chase one lucky score

A useful improvement appears across several tests. Compare recent averages and consistency, not only the highest WPM number.

Read ahead and type in groups

Experienced typists do not process every letter as an isolated event. They begin to recognize short words, common endings, and familiar combinations. Keeping the eyes a few characters ahead helps the hands maintain a smoother rhythm.

Practise weak combinations

A learner may type W and O correctly in isolation but hesitate when alternating between hands. Practise combinations that cross hands and rows, then place them inside words and sentences. The Smart Review feature can generate focused practice from tracked weak keys.

Set weekly goals

A sensible weekly goal might be improving average WPM by one or two points while maintaining at least 95% accuracy. At higher speeds, even smaller improvements can be meaningful.

Speed and accuracy questions

What accuracy should I maintain?

For general practice, aim for at least 95% once the keys are familiar. Certificate-level tests use stricter requirements because the result should represent sustained skill.

Why does my WPM change between tests?

Text difficulty, punctuation, fatigue, concentration, and test length all affect WPM. Use several comparable tests to judge progress.
