Typing Without Looking Practice: A Simple Daily Routine
A short routine for people who already know basic key positions and want to rely less on watching the keyboard while maintaining accuracy.
Start with two minutes of guided warm-up
Before no-look practice, complete a short guided lesson or familiar home-row drill. The goal is to remind your fingers where they start, not to chase a high WPM score.
Move to five minutes with eyes on the screen
Open No-Look Typing Practice and choose common words or sentences. Use F and J to re-center if you drift. Avoid looking down to find one missing key; pause and feel for the home row instead.
Use custom practice for problem keys
If letters such as Y, B, P, or punctuation repeatedly interrupt you, enter them in the Custom Keys Typing Test. Focused repetition is more efficient than repeating an entire paragraph when only a few transitions are weak.
Finish with a measurement, not more practice
End with a 1-minute test or, once a week, a longer test. Practice builds the skill; a test measures it. If you prefer no countdown during the learning portion, use Untimed mode in the Custom Test Studio.
What to track during a daily routine
Do not track only WPM. Note whether you looked down, which keys caused hesitation, how often you lost the home-row position, and whether accuracy stayed consistent from the first minute to the last. The Statistics and Weak-Key Coach can help identify repeated key problems after measurable practice.
For variety, alternate no-look sessions with no-highlight plain-text practice. The first removes dependence on the physical keyboard; the second removes dependence on colored screen feedback. Combining them later can make ordinary writing feel more natural without forcing both difficulties on a beginner at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Can beginners use this routine?
Beginners should first learn finger placement and key positions with guided lessons, then introduce short no-look periods.
What accuracy should I aim for?
Use accuracy as the main signal. If it falls sharply when you stop looking, reduce difficulty and rebuild the weak keys.
