Characters per minute vs words per minute
CPM measures raw character output, while WPM normalizes text into five-character words. CPM is particularly useful when comparing keyboard entry tasks that include numbers, codes, punctuation, or short fields where normal word boundaries are less meaningful.
For an approximate conversion, divide CPM by five. A rate of 300 CPM is therefore about 60 standardized WPM. Always pair speed with accuracy when judging performance.

What counts as a character?
Characters per minute measures the number of characters entered during an interval. For ordinary English typing, letters, digits, spaces and punctuation may all be included. Use the same counting rule for every attempt. This calculator accepts a count; it does not inspect a passage or decide whether your entries were correct.
A CPM example you can repeat
Suppose you enter 900 characters in three minutes. Divide 900 by 3 to get 300 CPM. Under the five-character typing-word convention, divide 300 by 5 to get 60 WPM. For a 45-second attempt, enter 0.75 minutes. Entering 45 in the minutes field instead would describe a much longer session and produce a misleadingly low result.
CPM is not always keystrokes per minute
A modifier such as Shift can be pressed without producing a character. Backspace removes text, and an input method can require multiple presses for one character. Consequently, character count and physical key-press count are not interchangeable. For languages with combining marks or complex input methods, document how the source system counts characters before comparing results.
Using CPM in practice
CPM can help with number entry, punctuation drills and short text tasks, where natural word length is a distraction. Record accuracy with it: rapidly entering incorrect characters is not useful productivity. Use the numeric keypad course for repeated data entry and the keyboard tester if a particular key seems unreliable. Neither a CPM calculation nor a hardware test is an employment qualification.
