Turn key recognition into a rhythm
A 20 WPM goal gives a developing typist room to practise spacing and complete sentences. Work towards a repeatable result rather than treating one fast burst as your normal speed.
20 WPM represents about 100 scoring characters per minute before accounting for the chosen scoring method. A 20-second sprint is a different measurement.

What 20 WPM looks like over time
A standard scoring word contains five characters. This table shows the nominal pace at 20 WPM; natural words have different lengths. It is an illustration, not a count of work you will finish.
| Duration | Scoring words | Characters at this pace |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 20 | 100 |
| 3 minutes | 60 | 300 |
| 5 minutes | 100 | 500 |
| 10 minutes | 200 | 1,000 |
How this test scores your goal
The engine rounds Gross WPM from attempted characters divided by five and elapsed minutes. It rounds accuracy from correct characters divided by attempts, then rounds Gross WPM multiplied by accuracy to produce Net WPM. The goal uses that displayed Net WPM and accuracy. Scoring and correction rules differ between providers, so compare like-for-like results.
For example, 60 Gross WPM at 95% accuracy gives 57 Net WPM. Speed alone does not complete the goal, and ending a timed attempt early does not complete it either.
How to work towards 20 WPM
Practise familiar word pairs and keep the same fingers responsible for the same keys. Notice pauses before Space and capital letters. When accuracy drops, reduce the pace and work on the movements that caused the mistakes.
- Take one complete test with a duration you can repeat.
- Check accuracy, repeated mistakes and consistency alongside Net WPM.
- Use Practise my mistakes on the results for a focused drill and comparable retest.
- Try fresh text next to check whether the improvement transfers.
20 WPM typing test questions
What does 20 WPM mean?
20 WPM represents about 100 scoring characters per minute before accounting for the chosen scoring method. A 20-second sprint is a different measurement.
Is 20 WPM good?
A useful result depends on your task, text difficulty, accuracy and duration. Use 20 WPM as a personal practice goal, then compare it with any specific class or job requirement. There is no universal passing speed for every role.
How do I pass this 20 WPM goal test?
Finish your selected 1, 3, 5 or 10-minute test, reach at least 20 displayed Net WPM and meet the selected accuracy goal. The default is five minutes and 95% accuracy. Ending early does not complete the goal.
Can I take the 20 WPM test for 10 minutes?
Yes. Choose 10 minutes before starting. The speed goal stays the same; you type for longer. Compare ten-minute results with other ten-minute results.
Does this page award a typing certificate?
Reaching this goal is a practice result, not a verified certificate award. Use the dedicated certificate test and its separate eligibility rules for a typing certificate.
Is this an English, shorthand or numeric test?
This page uses English paragraph typing on a physical or supported on-screen keyboard. It does not measure shorthand dictation, Hindi or Marathi typing, or ten-key numeric entry. Those tasks need their own content and scoring.
Can I practise without an account?
Yes. Guest attempts use this browser’s existing test history. Signed-in learning uses the site’s existing automatic sync when enabled for your account. You can use the existing export/import controls to back up local learning data.
