A Second Chance

Nora found the old letter while moving books from one shelf to another. It had been written three years earlier by Sam, after an argument that ended their relationship. She remembered being too angry to read beyond the first paragraph. Now the words felt different. The letter did not demand forgiveness. Sam had admitted where he had failed, explained what he was trying to change, and accepted that Nora might never answer. She sat on the floor and read it twice. Time had not erased the reasons they separated, but it had changed both of them. Nora had learned to speak sooner when something hurt. Sam, according to mutual friends, had become more patient and less defensive. She did not mistake change for a guarantee. Still, she wondered whether the story had ended because they were wrong for each other or because they had been too inexperienced to repair what went wrong. Nora sent a short message asking if he would like to meet. Sam replied an hour later. Their first conversation was careful and sometimes uncomfortable, but it was also honest. They decided not to recreate the old relationship. If they tried again, they would build a new one from what they had learned. A second chance, Nora discovered, was not the same as returning to the past.
